Reported Speech Reported speech conveys another speaker’s meaning without repeating their exact words, so changes depend on context and sentence structure. Direct and Reported Forms Direct speech quotes the speaker’s exact words; reported speech presents the meaning from a narrator’s viewpoint. Choose the form that best suits the purpose and audience. Choose the Form Reporting Verb Tense and Viewpoint When the reporting verb is in the past, verb forms commonly shift back, and pronouns or time expressions may change to match the new viewpoint. Keep the original time reference when the context shows that it remains valid. Preserve Meaning Check the Reference Before changing a time or place expression, ask whether it is still accurate from the reporter’s situation. A form change that makes the statement less accurate should be avoided. Statements and Questions Reported statements usually use a reporting clause followed by a content clause. Reported questions use statement word order, and their reporting structure depends on whether the original question was open or yes-or-no.
